Vi este artículo de noticias hoy: “SMSU se mueve a la universidad estatal de Misuri evidente.” I saw this news article today: “SMSU moves to patent Missouri State University.” 

¿Patente? ¡Argh! El artículo debería leer: “SMSU mueve al registro la marca registrada: universidad estatal de Misuri.”Patent? Argh! The article should read: “SMSU moves to  register the trademark: Missouri State University.”

Esto es realmente una historia interesante que tengo conexiones con. Detrás a principios de los años 1990 fui seleccionado cuando el Gobernador designó al representante estudiantil en la Comisión de Cambio de nombre (NMSU) de la universidad estatal de Misuri de Nordeste . NMSU es una grande escuela, pero tenía un tiempo difícil distinguiéndose de las otras escuelas de Misuri "regionales" (NWMS, SMSU, SEMSU, CMSU, etc.). En una tentativa de marcarse de nuevo, NMSU cambió su nombre (sobre el consentimiento de la legislatura estatal) a la universidad estatal Truman.  This is actually an interesting story that I have connections with. Back in the early 1990’s I was selected as the Governor appointed student representative on Northeast Missouri State University’s (NMSU) Name Change Commission. NMSU is a great school, but was having a hard time distinguishing itself from the other “regional” Missouri schools (NWMS, SMSU, SEMSU, CMSU, etc.). In an attempt to rebrand itself, NMSU changed its name (upon consent of the state legislature) to Truman State University.  

Durante la investigación (si la memoria me sirve derecho) para el cambio de nombre estaba claro que (hasta pre1994) hacia el Sudoeste había intentado repetidamente cambiar de SMSU al estado de Misuri, sólo para tener aquellos apoyados por la universidad de Misuri lo bloquean. [Probablemente tengo mi vieja carpeta "de Cambio de nombre" en algún sitio con todos los viejos artículos de periódico sobre las tentativas anteriores del SMSU. ¿] Iba “la universidad estatal de Misuri” la "universidad diluida de Misuri”? ¿MSU v MU? Es una pregunta buena.  During research (if memory serves me right) for the name change it was clear that (even pre-1994) Southwest had repeatedly attempted to change from SMSU to Missouri State, only to have those backed by the University of Missouri block it. [I probably have my old “Name Change” folder somewhere with all of the old newspaper articles about SMSU’s previous attempts.] Would “Missouri State University” dilute “University of Missouri”? MSU v MU? It’s a good question.  

Esto parece que SMSU trata de hacer el cambio de nombre otra vez, por lo visto esta vez archivando marcas registradas "de intención al uso" antes de conseguir la aprobación de la Legislatura.It looks like SMSU is trying to make the name change again, apparently this time filing “intent-to-use” trademarks before getting approval from the Legislature.

Las rivalidades estatales enfadadas existen en todas partes. Aquí es la universidad estatal Boise v. la universidad de Idaho. Yo sólo podría imaginar llorar y rechinar de dientes si BSU hubiera intentado cambiar su nombre a algo algo cerca de U de mí (hay ya una universidad estatal de Idaho en Pocatello). Tenga que amar la política educativa.Cross state rivalries exist everywhere. Here it is Boise State University v. the University of Idaho. I could only imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth if BSU would have attempted to change their name to something anything near U of I (there is already an Idaho State University in Pocatello). Gotta love educational politics.
