Yes, you can use google ads for test marketing, although it always struck me as a little oily, especially if you’re one of those people who would do it with a product that’s only vaporware.
What I’ve done in the past is to use the ad tools to look at activity in a market space. The amount of traffic estimated and the cost per hit tell you a lot about a market, without paying a dime or misleading people who click on the ads.
My favorite ad spoof on google was done by a security analyst. The ad was something like, “Click here to infect your computer with the latest trojan virus!” Yep, he got traffic from that ad! This says something I think, but what I don’t really know…

I do not have specific examples of inventors using AdWords to test market their invention. However, there is no reason why it should not work with an invention as it does with other products. Also, you can use tools to gauge the popularity of particular search terms related to your invention (e.g. https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal).
