Another Invention Promotion Company Story

January 19, 2006 on 9:29 am | In Independent Inventors |

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine.  He talked to me a couple weeks ago about a buddy who was about to send a $9,000 check to one of the invention promotion companies.  I referred him to my earlier post on Independent Inventors and Invention Promotion Companies for further reading regarding what the USPTO, FTC and others say about various companies.

In today’s conversation my friend revealed that the idea was taking something small (already on the market) and making it two times bigger and getting Corporation X to sell it.  The invention promotion company apparently called the inventor back, said "send us the $9,000 quickly, we have talked to Corporation X and they are hot to license it."

The problem is that the invention is clearly not patentable.  The invention really is taking something small that is used for kids and making it bigger so adults can use it for the same thing.  There is no difference other than size.  Thus, there is no way that Corporation X (which is a major corporation) would ever have actually talked with the invention promotion company and indicated that they were "hot."  ARGH.

  1. I typically like to blame the victim so don’t take anything Im about to say personally: Anyone who would be willing to pay 9 grand to a company to license something is extremely ignorant. first, why 9 grand?!?!? did he ever stop to ask? Why not 8, or 28765 grand? Why 9? And if they are so hot to license, why does this company need his money at all? Let them give him a percentage. Someone who doesn’t stop to ask these questions is beggin to be ripped off.

People love to fool themselves into thinking great things tend to occur overnight. Love at first sight, penny stocks, inventing a product, losing weight….. its a business like every other business. Actively invest time and effort into it and if you have a good idea youll make money. Anyone who comes along and tells you differently is trying to scam you. Instead of blindly handing over 9 grand, if he had spent 500 bucks on an hour with a patent attorney they would have explained it all to him.

I genuinely believe these companies should be put out of business, but people also need to grow up and realize whats out there.

  2. I’m curious what inventor would send out a check before having signed any legal paperwork, e.g. a retainer agreement or a licensing contract.

  3. Well, I didn’t take what you said personally, but I am thankful for my experience with the company that I contacted. They sent me the forms and gave me the ritual dance, and then when I informed them that I didn’t get paid for another week … told me to hurry and get the signed agreements in. Something sneaky in china town if you ask me. I had been researching them and companies like them online, and it was only tonight that I found all the negative information and this site/blog. Nope, didn’t send the papers. Not going to. Thank you for being here.

It’s not that we’re all stupid or looking for something fast or free. It’s that the idea of having a lawyer fee (up to $20k), patent etc fees (who knows? I don’t), production fees for prototype (depending on product). The amount of money that they ask for since they already have a set up is a bargain. The problem is that they aren’t being honest or above board. If they did what they offered, we and they would make money. But they don’t. They aren’t thinking of us. But this research (that I didn’t know where to start prior) is helping me so that now I will be able to do it myself and hire the RIGHT people to do it. Thank you all for being here. And, try to be a little kinder to people who just don’t know where else to get their information from. Not everyone is computer/internet savvy. And for those of us learning … it takes time. M.Blake
