I had a number of readers ask for more details on dual monitors¦so here it is. You’ll be amazed how easy this is. You’ll need Windows XP, a spare monitor, a spare video card (AGP or PCI¦the newer the better) and that is it¦no special software needed. I am using Windows XP home and my main monitor is powered by on board video (not a separate video card).
[Note: I started writing this all up, step by step, and then found a better explanation than I could ever give. So, read this: http://freepctech.com/pc/001/guide_dual_monitors.shtml. It is an excellent summary of the process. Rather than do work someone else has already done, I'll cut to the chase.]
For me it was real simple. I shut down the computer, opened the case, installed the new video card, closed case, rebooted, Windows XP found the video card driver automatically, a little configuring in “Display Properties-Settings” (clicked on the new monitors icon, clicked on “Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor”), and magically, it worked. Piece of cake.
Some observations:
- You have to un-maximize a window to be able to drag it to the other monitor.
- You might want to increase the resolution of the second monitor if it is going to be 6+ inches further from your nose.
- I like to leave Outlook, Skype, Acrobat and Groove running in the spare/second monitor, while I keep Word and Explorer/FireFox open in the main monitor. Works pretty well.
Overall, I’m hooked. It is well worth the sacrifice of two square feet of my desktop.

Something else to add… practically every laptop I’ve ever seen has the ability to do this out of the box (at least with XP).
I use my laptop as my main PC at work. It has a 17 in widescreen display, plus I have the second monitor. I love it!
Put your app on one side, figures on the other. Claim chart in one, the subject of the claim chart in the other. Put your Amendment in one, whatever you need to look at (reference, the application, the Office Action) in the other. The combinations are endless…
