Writing your own patent application and pulling your own teeth

Bob Shaver at the Patent Pending Blog with a post on “Writing Your Own Patent Application.“  Bob talks about how to, but also cautions that it can be a “big mistake.”

I agree.  I’ve got a number of stories about inventors who wrote their own patent applications and bungled them up really bad (one of which lost all of his rights by filing a Response to a final action via FEDEX).

You should educate yourself about the patenting process, but realize that there are thousands of rules in the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (MPEP), a number of which can nuke your entire patent application and strip you of all of your rights.

Please, please, please.  Do yourself a favor and consult with a patent attorney or agent.

I imagine that you can go to Barnes and Noble and pick up a book on “Do It Yourself Dentistry” too…but why risk the pain?
