Patently Obvious Blog on X-Patents

August 9, 2004 on 12:03 pm | In Famous Inventors |

Dennis at the Patently Obvious Blog has a great post (worth reading) this morning discussing a New York Times piece on the X-Patents. “X-Patents” are:

The first 10,000 patents issued between 1790-1836 were not originally numbered and all records of them were lost in a fire at the patent office.

Examples of “X” patents include: x72 (Eli Whitney’s cotton gin) and x9430 (Samuel Colt).

Feel free to list any other X patents you know of in the comments (for future reference) [copies can be downloaded via http://www.pat2pdf.com by searching for "x12345"].

UPDATE: PHOSITA blog with an additional scoop, including additional resources and links.
