TiVo: you can only innovate if the NFL and MPAA say so | PVRblog

Great post talking about the NFL and MPAA’s first salvo in the battle to keep TiVo from releasing its “TiVo ToGo” product. TiVo ToGo (as I understand it) is a USB dongle that you plug into your laptop or desktop computer that gives you the ability to copy programs you recorded off your TiVo and on to your computer. You can ONLY watch the programs if the dongle is plugged in. Without the dongle…you are SOL. TiVo ToGo is great news if you want to watch what you recorded on your TiVo on your laptop (on vacation, during your commute (for those of you unlucky enough to have a commute (yes, I am mocking you), etc.). What is amazing is the lengths that TiVo has gone to lock down the TiVo so you can’t extract digital video (thereby protecting copyrights (ok…so they probably did it to insulate themselves from suit))…yet copyright owners are still going after them. Amazing.
