Patent Examiner Training

July 14, 2004 on 8:57 am | In USPTO |

I received an email via the blog yesterday asking about what one has to do to become a patent examiner. I didn’t know the answer, but the USPTO has a set of pages detailing the requirements (and open positions): http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/ac/ahrpa/ohr/jobs/jobs.htm.

I was surprised to see that that main page specifically says “– US Citizenship Required –”. I’ve always wondered about that (pulling hair and gnashing teeth)….

I’ll leave the comments open if any of you want to comment, give guidance, etc.

  1. US citizenship, yes. The ability to write well and proficiency in English, no.

To become a patent examiner, all one must do is meet the requirements and follow the instructions listed on the provided link. Like many HR departments, the Patent People then sort through the applications in an attempt to find the best candidates. It’s not like they’re choosing from the cream of the crop, though… The borrow from someone wiser and more cynical than me: Those who can — engineer. Those who can’t — examine patents. Good luck in your job search!
